City of 1,000 Easels descends on Asheville

On Sunday, Sept. 12, artists will set up their easels and tools on the streets of downtown Asheville and get to work. As the press release states, City of 1,000 Easels is a pilot program launched by The Asheville Area Arts Council that strives to “promote the role of arts in the community by showcasing the magnitude of the visual arts sector through a self-guided walking tour.”  The event also offers an opportunity for the public to engage with professional and amateur artists alike and are invited to witness their creative process in motion.

Between 3 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, all artists participating in the event will create an original piece of art while working in designated “spots,” corners and side-streets throughout downtown Asheville (a map will be available through the Arts Council). During the three-hour showcase, artists are invited to participate in a silent auction, with the option of donating the proceeds to the Arts Council. Program Director Graham Hackett writes that, “Asheville is widely recognized as a cultural arts destination, but I’m not sure anyone truly understands just how expansive the creative community is in this city. To share they dynamics of our unique arts culture, we’re delivering straight to the public.”
