Is your dog the fastest, most agile or most “ear-resistible” pup in town? Put your canine to the test, or just let your four-legged friend romp through Carrier Park, on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
Join some of Asheville’s favorite rescue organizations, including Animal Compassion Network, Asheville Humane Society and Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, for a Dog Day Afternoon. The festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. with a dog-friendly 1.2-mile run through the park. Then the games begin, with a the “Best Heinz 57” wiener dog race, an overall fastest dog competition and a cutest ear showdown.
Local favorite Big Daddy Love will headline the Musician’s Workshop Stage, with Clemson University’s Xanderfly opening. Food will be available from the Meltdown, El Kimchi, The Hop, Roly Poly and JW BBQ.
The festivities are free and dog-friendly, although leashes are required at all times. If you’re not yet a dog owner, there will be plenty of adoptable dogs just waiting for a loving home.

This Saturday, Carrier Park will be home to Asheville’s 1st outdoor festival created for dogs to benefit dogs. The Dog Day Afternoon festival will take place at the East Green of Carrier Park in West Asheville to celebrate all things canine and support local dog rescue organizations.
Animal Compassion Network, the Asheville Humane Society and Brother Wolf, will be in attendance with large adoption areas showcasing dogs ready for adoption in hopes of matching these would-be pets with a loving foster or forever home.
The event kicks off at 10:30am with a dog-friendly 1.2 mile fun run around Carrier Park and will continue until 4pm with dog contests including a wiener dog race, “Best Heinz 57 dog”, “Most Ear- resistible dog”, “Best Lap Dog over 50lbs” and the Fastest Dog in Asheville Competition.
Advance registration is encouraged for all activities but walk-up entries are welcome. The Fun Run is $10 and all proceeds benefit Brother Wolf. The first 100 registrants will receive a goody bag from Wingbean and Wolf Gang Dog Bakery. Entry to the doggie contests is $5 per contest per dog with all proceeds benefiting the Asheville Humane Society.
The Companion Dog Training School will host an agility course and offer training tips for dog owners. Two dog-loving bands, Xanderfly and headliner Big Daddy Love, will perform on the Musician’s Workshop Stage.
Dog Day Afternoon will also feature a Kid Zone complete with bounce house, hula hooping with Asheville Hoops, intro to puppy classes and more.
Local businesses will vend dog-friendly wares and products. Food will be available from El Kimchi, Roly Poly, JW BBQ, and the Hop Ice Cream. Local craft beer will be sold by Highland Brewing. Attendees will also get to enjoy the beautiful walking trails and picnic areas surrounding the park. The festival will feature a large cooling tent as well as doggie pools to keep both dogs and humans beat the heat.
Dog Day Afternoon is a free event and produced by Mix 96.5, 98.1 the River, Prestige Subaru, Highland Brewing and other local business sponsors. While the event is dog-friendly, owners must bring their dogs on leash and aggressive or unruly dogs will be asked to leave.
