Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe plays Pisgah this Friday

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe last release, Brother’s Keeper, was a star-studded affair, featuring Meshell Ndegoecello, Mark Ford of the Black Crowes and members of Lenny Kravitz’s band. Which seems fair since saxophonist/flutist/vocalist Denson performed with Kravitz for years (including on Let Love Rule and Mama Said). He’s also recorded with Blind Boys of Alabama, Blackalicious and Stanton Moore, among others. And he cofounded funk outfits The Greyboy Allstars. And he leads the Karl Denson Trio (KD3). And he tours pretty much all the time, among his various projects — which brings him (with his Tiny Universe) to Pisgah Brewing Company on Friday, June 1.

This isn’t just a show. It’s an event. Local fun/rock/reggae band The Fritz opens the show, and then plays again, late-night, in the taproom. Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe performs on the outdoor stage; food vendors are Lowdown Food Truck, Gourmet Chip Co. and Our Taco Bus (formerly Pink Taco).

Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 day or show. A shuttle loads at Asheville Brewing Company on Coxe Ave. at 6:30 p.m. and leaves from Pisgah at midnight to return to ASheville — tickets are available for $10.

Xpress will give away two pairs of tickets to the show on Wednesday, through Facebook.
