Local is the new Black Friday

There’s nothing wrong with a little retail indulgence, especially with great holiday shopping deals aimed at keeping consumer dollars in the local economy. Sales take place on Friday, Nov. 29, unless otherwise noted.

Creative Allies Pop Culture Emporium features deals throughout the holiday season. Shop for unique and limited-edition band T-shirts at 58 Wall St. All holiday deals will begin on Black Friday and continue through Monday, Dec. 23: T-shirts (except clearance) are $15, posters are $5, limited edition canvas prints are $100, iPhone cases are $5, coffee mugs are $5, free tote bag from The Doors with any purchase (while supplies last). Creative Allies writes, “We will be providing an additional 20% discount on top of any in-store sale with a ticket/ticket stub from any of our following partners, The Orange Peel, The Grey Eagle and The Asheville Music Hall (good through 12/23). We’ll also be giving an additional 10% discount to locals who would like to purchase online using promo code AVLOVE. That promo will take affect on Cyber Monday.” Store hours are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m-6 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Sunday TBA.

Harvest Records outlined its Black Friday shopping protocol in this week’s email:
“We open at 10am (closed Thursday, FYI).
Here’s the LIST* of limited releases potentially available.
A la Record Store Day, we CANNOT hold any items in advance, nor guarantee any quantity of anything will be available. These pieces are available on a completely first-come, first-serve basis.
Beyond Black Friday-specific pieces, the shop is filled to the brim with great albums right now. It’ll be a fun weekend to browse regardless!”
* The LIST, BTW, includes Joseph Arthur’s Ballad of Boogie Christ, Act 2, Band of Horses’ Live at the Ryman,  Roy Orbison’s The Monument vinyl box set and other treats.

Union offers 20-percent off everything. “20-percent off all denim, dresses, sweaters, shirts, jackets, vests, pants, hats, scarves, wallets, ties, jewelry, handbags… EVERYTHING! Clearance items, too,” says a newsletter. The sale runs Friday, Nov. 29 through Sunday, Dec. 1.

Mast General Store will open early (9 a.m.) on Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving. A downloadable PDF of the store’s sales can be found here. It includes a 30-percent-off coupon for both Friday and Saturday.

Minx Boutique announces 25-percent off, store-wide sale (except consignment items), and two super-sale racks filled with items for 50-percent off.

Tops For Shoes launches its buy-one, get-one-half-off sale in its clearance department.

It can’t be a real Black Friday without the traditional holiday mayhem that we’ve all come to expect, led by the Wal-Mart example. Why, already this morning there was a reported stabbing over a parking space at one in WV, a riot in a Puerto Rican store, a fistfight (over Rachel Ray cookware) in Tennessee and a shooting in Chicago.

Local merchants need to get with the program if they want a real Black Friday!

This is always the most depressing day of the year for me reading about scenes like this.

Wouldn’t it be like so cool omg if the average American consumer were willing to stampede to the tax office every year to pay the salaries of teachers, cops, judges, firefighters, etc? No? I guess TVs and video game consoles are really more important.
