Outhouses on skis

Outhouses bring to mind summer camp “bathrooms” and campsite amenities – often, but not always, fond memories. But add a little snow and you’ve got yourself a bona fide outhouse race.

Why sprint to the finish line with an outhouse on skis? To prove the creativity and carpentry skills of businesses and community members alike. If hammers and wood aren’t your thing, outhouses are available for rent too.

There’s no yuck factor; every outhouse is clean and unused, a relief for the squeamish amongst us. It’s like a pinewood derby in the snow, only the vehicles are a bit unstable and maybe little bit dangerous. Videos from past years show outhouse racers crashing into snow banks and breaking out into laughter.

The derby starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18. It’s hosted by Sapphire Valley Ski Area and will benefit children who can’t otherwise afford to hit the slopes. Whether you rent, build or sponsor an outhouse, now is the time to register: 421-7348. Info: www.skisapphire.com
