If you’re both interested in small, community-based media and tired of homogenized, syndicated programming from corporate entities with no connection to the areas they serve, 2013 may be your year. Thousands of noncommercial radio licenses will become available all across the country next year, granting ordinary citizens unprecedented access to the airwaves.

The opportunity comes thanks in large part to the Prometheus Radio Project, a nonprofit organization that spent a decade fighting for the passage of last year’s Local Community Radio Act, which expanded the number of low-power frequencies allowed on public airwaves. This weekend, Prometheus’ Reclaim the Airwaves Tour visits Firestorm Café and Books to discuss the upcoming changes and assist interested individuals and organizations their license applications. Asheville FM‘s Kim Roney spoke with the tour’s Jeff Rousette about his organization, its mission and what to expect at the event.
