Shake it like a belly dancer

Belly dancing may seem like an exotic art that’s difficult to master, but that doesn’t mean that mere mortals can’t give it a try. The public is invited to shake their hips, belly and booty at a free belly dancing workshop on Tuesday, July 17.

The lawn of Western Carolina University‘s A.K. Hinds University will be transformed into a sea of movement when Lisa Zahiya of Studio Zahiya leads the group in a beginner’s belly dancing class.

Zahiya is known for her innovative choreography and talent. She won the Tribal Fusion Bellydancer of the Universe competition in 2008 and regularly brings her unique mix of belly dance, Bollywood, Bhangra and hip-hop to a wide range of Asheville venues.

Whether you’re new to the craft or a regular practitioner, join the WCU community for an evening of belly dancing in a low-pressure, high-energy setting.

Tuesday, July 17 from 5-7 p.m. on the lawn of WCU’s A.K. Hinds University Center. Free. Info: www.wcu.edu or studiozahiya.wordpress.com.
