Suggestion box: Best of WNC 2011 categories

And the winners could be …

The official start of summer is less than one week away. That means … well, that means a lot of things. Here at Xpress, we’re finalizing our plans for our annual Best of WNC poll, the annual celebration of all things regional, in which we invite you — the splendorous and ever-royal collective You, our readers — to vote for your favorite local businesses, restaurants, bars, bands, yoga studio, tattoo parlors and so much more.

Last year we had more votes than ever before, so we’re upping the ante with a host of changes and we want your input. Think back to the Best of WNC 2010.

Are there any categories that we missed last year? Any categories that were too broad or too specific? Please let us know what you think in the comment field. You can also use Twitter, hashtag #bestofwnc2011

A few guidelines:

Make your suggestions concise. For example: “Best cab driver.” No introductory remarks or rationale necessary.

It’s true, you are quite funny. But please keep the jokes out of the comment field. If you want to share some Best of WNC satire, use Twitter hashtag #bestofwncfunnies.

Consider the electorate. Will your suggested category get enough votes to justify its inclusion? Make sure it is not too broad or too specific.

We are reconsidering last year’s categories, refining the list to be as comprehensive as possible. Are there any categories that we should definitely keep?

The suggestion box is open.

We’ll announce the categories list — and our exciting new theme! — in our July 27 issue, along with the 2011 Bele Chere guide. Voting begins that same weekend (we’re improving that process, too.) This year could be one of the best to be the Best.

Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.

How about a “Nobody Cares About the Best of Category Unless You Still Act Like A Middle Schooler Voting in a Popularity Contest” (Like, OMG)? It’s fine for an online forum, but if you believe in it, get some help.

You know, Helen and i always use the ‘best of’ tally sheet to try new restaurants and events, but i wouldn’t mind if there were also many “Best New” categories to compliment the existing good restaurants and other businesses that we’ve already tried. Thus we can give credit to the people who continue to provide excellent service and to give a little shot in the arm for business trying hard to make Asheville happy while somehow profiting, too.
