The most fabulous footrace

The inaugural Gay 5K and Rainbow Fun Run takes place Saturday, June 18 at Carrier Park as part of Blue Ridge Pride’s Games in the Park.

The Gay 5K is a joint venture between Blue Ridge Pride and the Asheville Front Runners. Front Runnersis an international organization found in cities world-wide. The groups hold regular meetings for LGBTQ runners and walkers (and their straight allies). The local club was founded in January of this year and meets on Sundays at Carrier Park.

The Gay 5K begins at 10 a.m. Runner, joggers and walkers are invited, awards will be presented for the top finishers overall, masters and age groups. Also, according to press for the event, “In addition, we have special awards for the top partner teams. We have great prizes which have been generously donated by Jus’ Running, Malaprops, 444 Cafe Gallery, The Hop, Tingles Cafe, Earth Fare and Road ID.” Costumes are also encouraged.

Register online. Fees are $15 in advance for adults and youth/$20 on race day. The Fun Run is $5 advance/$20 race day.

After the race, stay for Blue Ridge Pride Games: Races, contests, food, live music and “totally gay awards and prizes” from noon-4 p.m.
