Video-a-Go-Go: The local video roundup

Last week, as you may recall, we brought you the first in a series of Asheville-specific videos by Atlanta-based brew-fan VideoBeerReviews. It turns out that there was more to say about the local beer culture than could be summed up by a few video posts, and VBR decided instead to go the extra mile and talk to Jason over at downtown beer shop Bruisin’ Ales. While ten minutes of shop talk about local and import beers might not be for everyone, it might just be the right amount to slate the thirst of a true brew aficionado. And if that’s just not enough, you can also get a video synopsis of all the VBR Asheville coverage and a two-part tour of Highland Brewing (for part two click here).

In this day of precise, radar-assisted meteorology, it can sometimes be easy to forget just how weird and awesome actual weather can be. It’s one thing to hear about a flash-flood warning, it’s an entirely different thing to see a massive downpour cover the streets. YouTube user dichroicglassman is clearly caught up in the middle of a first-hand weather experience. Let’s watch.

If you were looking to turn the jazz world on its head by making a steel drum into the centerpiece of a quartet, I have some disappointing news: Asheville’s Jonathan Scales’ Fourchestra beat you to it by a few years. In this video, AskAsheville gives us a sample of Scales’ music and a brief interview with the mind behind it.

If there’s one thing Asheville clearly doesn’t have enough of, it’s jam skating videos. We’ve got the skates, we’ve got the hip-hop dancers … what’s the problem here? I guess it’s up to trailblazers like Nate to keep the dream alive, like he’s doing here at Amboy Park.

If you listen to a lot of radio, it’s hard not to casually wonder what the people and places behind those airwaves actually look like. In the last decade, of course, plenty of radio personalities have transitioned into video simply by putting a camera in the studio, but at the local level such things are kind of rare. Star 104.3 FM has decided to give video a shot with these behind-the-scenes vlog posts. I won’t kid you though; it’s a little disorienting to see people talking to the camera like they would an on-air microphone.

And we close this week with video of an event that never happened, on a tour that never took place, based around an award that wasn’t won, shot in a studio that no longer exists, featuring a band that hasn’t performed regularly in years. What’s not to like? Allow me to present “Lube Royale Accepts AAG Award,” part of the genuinely awesome local music video collection on dougaledpictures. (And if that doesn’t float your boat, check out this classic clip of defuct band The Merle performing a show in the courtyard of long-shutterd venue Vincent’s Ear, or a recent performance by very much alive and thriving band Reigning Sound.)

Each week, dozens upon dozens of interesting local videos are uploaded to YouTube. It’s a lot to keep up with. Did we miss a particularly interesting, recently uploaded local video? Share it by leaving the videos URL (but not the embed code) in the comment fields below. Also, please mark it Not Work Safe if there’s any controversial content to the video.
