Smart bets: Callaghan and Erick Baker

Pop songstress Callaghan is a risk taker when it comes to her music career. She swapped her home in London for one in Atlanta after her idol, musician Shawn Mullins, agreed (via a Myspace conversation) to produce her debut album. Later she embarked on a living-room tour of the states, determined to hand-deliver her country-tinged tunes to fans. Erick Baker was similarly tugged into showbiz after a promoter heard his cathartic voice and impassioned guitar playing at a songwriter showcase. That resulted in an opening slot for John Legend at Knoxville’s Tennessee Theatre, a 30-minute experience that ignited Baker’s ambition to perform professionally. The two musicians both play a set at The Altamont Theatre on Friday, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m. $15/$18/$30 for VIP seating. thealtamont.com.
