Smart bets: Mike Krecioch

Before down shifting into the pace of Western North Carolina, local author Mike Krecioch served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 28 years, including the free-for-all ’60s. His latest work, Convict Lake: Behind the Badge (released by Asheville’s Grateful Steps Publishing) draws upon the many stories amassed during that time. “Journey with five LAPD veteran officers to California’s High Sierra as they discuss the politics, cases and eccentric personalities of the LAPD,” reads a book description that also promises “humor, murder, tenderness, decapitation, fire, sadness, indifference, anger, thievery, family disputes, stabbings, shootings, riots, serial killers and human stupidity.” Krecioch will touch on these topics over light hors d’oeuvres and wine during his free book launch event at MetroWines on Friday, March 18, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. metrowinesasheville.com.
