Get Him to the Greek


The Story: An inept intern must get an uncontrollable, drug-addled rock star from London to L.A. in three days. The Lowdown: An occasionally funny comedy that gets too bogged down in wayward plotting and a predilection towards tacked-on weightiness.

MacGruber


The Story: An action hero, long thought to be dead, returns to the fray in order to stop an evil mastermind from nuking Washington, D.C. The Lowdown: Eighties kitsch and a parade of juvenile humor traipsing around as innovative offensiveness make for a long, tedious slog.

Andy Garcia on the reopening of City Island and the state of independent film

Did anybody catch City Island during its earlier—and very brief—run locally? Xpress movie critic Justin Souther did, but he seems to be one of the few who did. So when it turned out that the film was being given a second chance at big-screen life in Asheville—starting this Friday at Carolina Asheville—Souther spoke with the film’s star, Andy Garcia, about this unusual turn of events, about the film itself and the state of independent movie production today.

Babies


The Story: Follows the first year of four newborn babies from around the world. The Lowdown: A low-key, specialized take on the documentary that's only really worthwhile for those who find the goings-on of babies the height of adorableness.

The Losers


The Story: A group of soldiers left for dead in Bolivia try and get revenge against the CIA agent who double-crossed them. The Lowdown: A generic actioner that's never as stylish as it wants to be, nor as clever as it thinks it is.

Kick-Ass


The Story: A mild-mannered teen -- and comic-book nerd -- decides to try his hand at becoming a superhero, only to find himself in over his head with the mob and other masked heroes. The Lowdown: A gory, often funny, slickly made attempt at reimagining the superhero genre that never hits the right tone. Ultimately,…

The Joneses


The Story: A group of salespeople -- masquerading as a family unit -- move into an upper-class neighborhood in an attempt to push high-priced goods on their neighbors. The Lowdown: An occasionally high-minded, often heavy-handed look at suburban malaise and consumerism that never rises above the realm of the perfectly fine.

Letters to God


The Story: A prepubescent cancer sufferer inspires those around him with the letters he writes to God. The Lowdown: Generic, heartstrings-tugging Christian melodrama that's exactly like -- and as exciting as -- every other bout of melodramatic fundamentalist filmmaking.

Repo Men


The Story: In the future, a repo man in the business of repossessing designer organs from deadbeat patients finds himself on the other end of the repossession game. The Lowdown: A well-acted and occasionally stylish sci-fi yarn that's too derivative to be as thought-provoking as it thinks it is.

Brooklyn’s Finest


The Story: Three disparate cops all try to survive in a world filled with violence and temptation. The Lowdown: A heavy police drama that's professionally made, but suffers from a reliance on clichés and the feeling that every role in the film was miscast.

Cop Out


The Story: Two suspended cops try to track down a stolen baseball card and bring down a deadly drug lord. The Lowdown: A generic buddy-cop movie that has a handful of decent chuckles, but does little else to distinguish itself.
