When it comes to drinking favorites, WNC definitely has its "usual suspects," including the Asheville bar of that name. Usual Suspects once again took the lead in multiple categories, placing in the top three for Bartender, Cocktail, Wine Selection and all-around drinking den, where it was bested by Jack of the Wood, another perennial favorite. Barley's kept its perch atop the Beer Selection category, as did Santé for Wine Selection. Highland, Pisgah and Asheville Brewing kept their spots as kings of the breweries, though they did swap places from their rankings in last year's poll.

2008 brings plenty of newcomers, too. West Asheville's The Admiral fought its way into a top-bar spot, The Thirsty Monk did likewise in the Beer category and Hops & Vines did so in Wine Selection. Meanwhile, Asheville Yacht Club's Jamie Reel took second place in the bartender category, no doubt helped by the flaming concoctions the downtown spot dishes out.

Asheville's bars, bartenders and breweries all inspire deep loyalties, for which there is plenty of good reason. If you're in need of finding out why, go out one night to any one of the aforementioned places. Salud!
