Climbing PoeTree to Perform Nov. 13 at UNCA

Press release

from UNC Asheville News Service

Climbing PoeTree – the duo of spoken word artists Alixa Garcia and Naima Penniman – will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 at UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium.

Climbing PoeTree probes themes of social, environmental and racial justice, and spiritual expansion, incorporating stories of courage and love in the face of suffering, violence and fear. Using dual-voice spoken-word poetry and multimedia theatre, Garcia and Penniman have worked to sharpen their art as a tool for popular education, community organizing, and personal transformation.

With roots in Haiti and Columbia, the duo is based in Brooklyn, N.Y. and, since its debut in 2003, has performed in more than 75 U.S. cities and many foreign countries.

Tickets are $15, $5 for area students, and are available at the Highsmith University Union front desk, at the door, or online at uncatickets.com. For information and a link to the box office, visit cesap.unca.edu or call 828/251-6674.
