Raleigh, N.C. - Today, Governor McCrory announced the following direct appointments:
Board of Science and Technology, Members
Appoint Dr. Bruce King (Forsyth County) - Dr. King is the Associate Provost for Research at Wake Forest University and also serves as a Professor within the university's Department of Chemistry. Dr. King's lab work has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.
Appoint Dr. Robert Wilhelm (Mecklenburg County) - Dr. Wilhelm is the Executive Director of the Charlotte Research Institute at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Wilhelm also serves as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Engineering Science. Dr. Wilhelm has served as Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development at UNC at Charlotte since 2011.
Emergency Response Commission, Members
Appoint William Anderson (Buncombe County) - Anderson serves as the Chief of Police for the City of Asheville and has held the position since March 2012. He is a member of the NAACP, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives and a regional director for the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police. Anderson currently serves on the Commission.
Appoint Brian Pearce (Cumberland County) - Pearce serves as Chief of Cape Fear Valley Health in Cumberland County, directly overseeing the County EMS. He has worked as a Field Training Officer, Education Coordinator and Lead Paramedic for Cumberland County EMS. Pearce serves as the Vice Chair of the NC Association of EMS Administrators. Pearce currently serves on the Commission.
Appoint Larry Perkins (Wake County) - Perkins is the Assistant General Manager at the RBC Center in Raleigh. Perkins is a Certified Facilities Executive (CFE), a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and a Crowd Management Professional (CMP). Perkins is past President of the International Association of Assembly Managers. Perkins currently serves on the Commission.
Appoint William Schatzman (Forsyth County) - Schatzman has served as Forsyth County's Sheriff since 2002. Schatzman has served in various capacities for the FBI, retiring in 1994 after 24 years in the Bureau. He is a member of the North Carolina Sheriffs' Association and serves as the NCSA Representative for the North Carolina State Emergency Response Committee. Schatzman currently serves on the Commission.
Appoint Keith Shannon (Mecklenburg County) - Shannon is the Protective and Analytical Services Manager: Executive Protection and Special Services for Duke Energy. Shannon has served as a police officer for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and also as Reserve Deputy Sheriff for the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. Shannon will replace Ricky McIntyre on the Commission.
Appoint Jerry VeHaun (Buncombe County) - VeHaun currently serves as Director of the Buncombe County Emergency Management. He has served as Director since 1972. VeHaun has also served as Mayor of Woodfin since 2003 and is a Past President of the Kiwanis Club of West Asheville. He is an internationally certified Emergency Manager. VeHaun will replace Rocky Hyder on the Commission.
