Specialist in Roman architecture and numismatics to give talk at UNCA

Press release

From UNC Asheville News Services
Melanie Grunow Sobocinski, a specialist in Roman architecture and numismatics, presents a lecture, “The Capitoline on Coins: Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Roman Temple,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library, Whitman Room.

The Capitoline Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus was the first temple featured on Roman coins, and Sobocinski will describe how examining the building’s remnants, Roman texts and coins helped her reconstruct a picture of the temple’s meaning to the Romans.

Sobocinski is the Archaeological Institute of America Metcalf Lecturer for 2012-2013. A former assistant professor of art history at the University of Michigan, Dearborn, Sobocinski is now an independent scholar.

This event is free and open to the public, and is co-sponsored by the WNC chapter of Archaeological Institute of America and the UNC Asheville departments of art and classics.

For more information, call Laurel Taylor, UNC Asheville lecturer in classics and art, at 828/251-6290.
