AC-T: Airport Road is getting a new supermarket, sporting goods store, hotel

Here’s an excerpt from the Asheville Citizen-Times article:

Airport Road is getting its second wind.

An Aldi supermarket is under construction, a Dick’s Sporting Goods store will soon go up across the street and a new Courtyard by Marriott hotel will emerge near the interstate in the coming months, all within a mile or so of each other.

And other developers are getting serious nibbles in the five-lane corridor that saw a massive building boom a decade ago but cooled considerably as the Great Recession took hold in 2008-09.

Bill Burgin is one of the developers counting on the corridor resurging.

“We’re talking to several tenants and users for property we have beside Olive Garden, but I can’t identify them just yet,” Burgin said. “And across the street, we’re close to signing a deal — sort of an upscale hamburger place on a 1.1-acre lot. We’ve got a letter of intent with a local guy.”

With Walmart on one end and the Southridge Shopping Center — with Lowe’s Home Improvement, Target and Best Buy — on the other, the corridor is attractive to merchants, restaurateurs and hoteliers.
