AC-T: Law would help people find towed cars

Here’s an excerpt from the Asheville Citizen-Times article:

A bill by a Republican Buncombe County lawmaker would make it easier for people to find cars that have been towed.

State Rep. Tim Moffitt’s bill, which passed the House and is in the Senate Transportation Committee, would require towing companies to alert law enforcement before they remove a vehicle.

The tow operator would provide police a description of the vehicle, the place from which the vehicle was towed, where it will be stored and contact information so the owner can retrieve it.

Owners could then call police, or the sheriff’s office, and quickly find out what happened to their cars.

State law requires immediate notification of a car’s owner though the only time frame it specifies is 24 hours for in-state vehicles and 72 hours for out-of-state. It doesn’t require police notification.
