“Aging with Awareness” talk to take place Thursday, April 18

Press release

From UNC Asheville News Services

Rabbi Sheila Weinberg, co-founder of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, will present a talk, “Aging with Awareness,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center. Weinberg’s talk is sponsored by the university’s Center for Jewish Studies and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville. This event is free and open to the public.

Weinberg is a Reconstructionist rabbi, educator and pioneer in contemplative practice, which combines Eastern meditative practices with Western religious thought. She is the author of “Surprisingly Happy: An Atypical Religious Memoir” (White River Press, 2010), which uses poetry, prose and prayers to chronicle her life, including her struggle with addiction, her philosophy of feminism, her personal spiritual journey and her family life.

Weinberg will use the five hindrances as described in Buddhist thought and reflected in the Passover story as a taking off point to examine obstacles to mental clarity, particularly those encountered in meditation, and analogous problems that arise with aging. Weinberg will consider pathways to freedom in internal as well as socio-political dimensions, and she will share her thoughts on the work involved in sustaining and supporting “wise aging.”
