Two alumni of Western Carolina University will be coming back to campus to kick off the university’s 2015 Summer Concert Series at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, when Asheville-based American Gonzos take the stage.

Both Andrew Thelston, guitarist and lead singer, and bassist Michael Dean are members of WCU’s 2009 graduating class. Together with drummer Toby Burleson, the trio formed the rock-, punk-, and funk-inspired American Gonzos in 2010, which released its debut album the following year. In 2013, the band—noted for its musicianship and infectious tunes— released its second album, “No Way To Live.” The power-trio is currently working on a third collection with producer Randall Harris.

In the meantime, American Gonzos will return to WCU’s Central Plaza next Thursday to welcome in the summer season and a new year of free concerts at the Cullowhee-based campus. The Summer Concert Series runs through June and July, with featured performances by the transcendent Charlotte-based Bubonik Funk on June 25, iconoclastic singer-songwriter Doug Gibson on July 16, and Smoky Mountain country rockers the Buchanon Boys July 23. Steph Stewart and The Boyfriends will close out the series July 30 with their particular brand of vintage Americana borne from the Appalachian foothills.

All concerts in the series will be held on Thursday evenings a 7 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, and snacks. In the case of rain, concerts will be relocated to WCU Illusions, located in the A.K. Hinds University Center.
