“The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.” — Flannery O’Connor

Inspired by the works of Flannery O’Connor and Jean Toomer, Barbed Wire Suit is an ensemble-created play in which each ensemble member strives to taste, smell, touch, and embody their own Southern experience. This singular play asks probing social questions about the stagnancy of Southern culture in regards to both class and race, exploring a world that is cluttered with dusty chairs, trinkets, and minds suspended in time.

Specifically, this work is rooted in Flannery O’Connor’s longer short story “The Displaced Person” as well as the short story “The Barber” and excerpts from Jean Toomer’s modernist novel Cane; specifically “Rhobert,” “Becky,” “Esther,” and the poems “Reapers” and “Georgia Dusk” (also in Cane).

“We are not following the texts as we would a script,” explains director Rachel Thomas-Levy. “We are using them as an entryway into the more tricky territory of intuitive artistic creation. It really is an ensemble based creation: each ensemble member is actively sculpting the work as both performers and outside eyes to each other’s work.”

Anam Cara Theatre Company produces experimental theatre that empowers artists, promotes equality, challenges thinking and transforms community. We provide a safe space for artists and audiences to take risks, grow, and collaborate.
