APD officer assaulted during drug arrest

Full release from the Asheville Police Department:

ASHEVILLE – On Sunday, 02-12-12, at approx. 7:00 pm; APD Officers responded to a report of drug activity at Altamont Apartments located at 72 North Market Street in downtown Asheville.

During their investigation of the drug complaint, they encountered 48 year old Clarence Virgil Wroten, acting suspiciously and attempting to avoid the officers. As the officers were interacting with Mr. Wroten and performing a consensual search of his pockets, the suspect suddenly assaulted Officer Evan Flanders by knocking his hands away and pushing him in an attempt to flee.

After a short struggle, Officers were able to take Mr. Wroten into custody. A more thorough search of his person revealed a felony amount of crack cocaine.

Mr. Wroten was charged with Resisting Officers, Assault on a Government Official, and Felony Possession of a Schedule II controlled substance. He is currently being held under a $500.00 dollar secure bond.

**The Officer involved in the assault was not seriously injured and did not require medical attention.
