Architect to present talk on ‘Designing Smaller Homes That Live BIG’

Press release from AIA Asheville’s Custom Residential Network :

Asheville – AIA Asheville’s Custom Residential Network (CRAN) presents Designing Smaller Homes That Live BIG!,  a talk by AIA architect Tina Govan, Thursday, October 2, 6pm at Lord Auditorium, Pack Memorial Library, Downtown Asheville.   Tina has been working as principal of her own firm in downtown Raleigh, NC for the past 20 years.  She is a residential architect who emphasizes making the most of every space in a home function at a high level.  Her focus of thinking about how a homeowner uses spaces daily, seasonally and over the course of years provides clients a way to think about designing smaller, but smarter.

In a recent article appearing in the Raleigh lifestyle magazine, Walter, Liza Roberts writes about Govan’s design of small neighborhood home:  The clients knew what they wanted in a house here:  Something small but efficient, in a walkable, downtown neighborhood.  The house they built with the aid of local architect Tina Govan is a revelation of contradictions.  Small, but expansive; practical but quirky.  With an abundance of daylight, simple lines, and natural materials, the house is bright and airy, with the spatial sense of a much bigger place.

“The idea of daily, seasonal, and generational adaptability is a topic that I believe will resonate in our community,” says AIA Asheville’s CRAN chairman, Nathan Bryant, of Samsel Architects.  “This topic is particularly relevant in Asheville as land is scarce and there is a strong interest in infill construction, reuse and adaptation of existing homes.”  Bryant also commented that Govan is an expert in the area of small homes and has been featured in Fine Homebuilding numerous times with articles on homes she has designed in North Carolina, all with an emphasis on smaller, yet well designed spaces.
