Award-Winning songwriter offers workshop to Asheville teens, starting Tuesday, Oct. 7

Award-winning singer-songwriter Cary Cooper will teach a four-session songwriting workshop starting Tuesday October 7, 2014 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Hyphen Coffee (81 Patton Ave, Asheville).  The workshop costs $100 and is open to any high school student interested in the songwriting process. Class size is limited to 10 students and advanced registration is required to participate.  Students can register by calling (214) 403-5553 or emailing cary@carycooper.com.

Cooper, past winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival’s prestigious New Folk Competition (past participants, Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams and Shawn Colvin) and songwriting instructor to high school students at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, says, “I love to help songwriters find their own unique voice; to help them sing the song that only they can sing.  I come with many tricks in my toolbox aimed at freeing up inhibitions, ignoring internal editors, and exploring unique subject matter and making it your own.”

Students should bring pen, paper, a recording device, and their instruments, though no instrument is required. A keyboard will be provided. The workshop is open to songwriters of all levels.

Dick Siegel, Interlochen Program Director calls Cary “an outstanding educator.  An accomplished songwriter and performer herself, Cary’s curriculum is innovative and thorough. She engages students with intelligence, warmth and humor, quickly earning their respect and affection.”   Former Interlochen student, Liv Greene, from Washington DC says, “Cary Cooper managed to unlock parts of my brain that I didn’t even know existed, helping me find my creativity underneath all the overly- organized thoughts. She opened up a whole new world of tools, tips and tricks for me, all while cultivating an amazing creative community that supports and inspires.”
