Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Run for Kids’ Sake announced for June 11 at Warren Wilson College

Press release from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina (BBBSWNC) is proud to announce the 8th annual Run for Kids’ Sake Off Road 10-mile/5k race on June 11th at Warren Wilson College. This event benefits the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in Buncombe County, including the Kids on Campus program, which pairs Warren Wilson student mentors with youth from the local community for weekly after-school activities.

The Run for Kids’ Sake will take runners and walkers through Warren Wilson’s beautiful campus in Swannanoa. The scenic course is almost entirely off public streets, so participants can enjoy pastures, creeks, woods and enthusiastic volunteers cheering them on along the way.

“This is truly a beautiful course that provides runners a chance to get off the beaten path, so to speak,” says Jamye Davis, Assistant Director of BBBSWNC. “They’re not only getting to enjoy the natural beauty of Warren Wilson’s campus, they’re also contributing directly to a program that has a powerful impact on the lives of children in their community.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina currently has more than 40 children from single-parent homes waiting to be matched with mentors in Buncombe County alone. These matches provide more than just friendship for local youth. “Bigs” and “Littles” participate in community activities together, spend time playing games and completing homework, and share meals. The Run for Kids’ Sake directly benefits the organization by providing critical funds that help match children with a mentor, and by supporting existing matches.

“The course is so beautiful and the event is well-organized – it’s a fun way to spend a Saturday morning,” says Christine Stubbe, a former BBBSWNC mentor. “I especially loved seeing some big brothers and sisters out there with their littles.”

The Run for Kids’ Sake will kick off at 8:30am on Saturday, June 11th. Registration costs $45 for the 10-mile, and $25 for the 5k. The 5k is open to both runners and walkers. Prizes will be awarded for all age groups. Pre-registration and packet pick up will be Friday, June 10th from 5:00-7:00pm at the United Way building in downtown Asheville. Participants can register in advance online, or from 7:00-7:45am on the day of the race. The event is sponsored by Blue Ridge Foot Centers, Jus’ Running, ENO, and Warren Wilson College. Be sure to check out the event website and Facebook page for more details or to sign up.
