BIKE & HIKE FOR LIFE; ANNUAL CYCLING EVENT ADDS HIKING ELEMENT JUNE 3-4

ASHEVILLE, N.C.–The 5th annual biking event to benefit Sisters of Mercy Urgent Care, Arts for Life, Sports Outreach and Mountain Area Pregnancy Services adds a new element this year: hiking the Appalachian Trail. On June 3 and 4, participants in Bike and Hike for Life can chose to bike or hike to support some great organizations that span one’s lifetime.

“To enhance local involvement, we have moved the event to summer and expanded options for participation,” said event founder Buster Brown. Participants can now Bike or Hike for Life close to home. The hiking option also coincides with the 100-year anniversary of the National Park Service and the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day.”

Cyclists will take off from Asheville on a challenging ride up to Mount Mitchell, the highest peak on the East Coast and back to Asheville, then ride the following day to Hot Springs, the lowest elevation in WNC.

Hikers start at Max Patch and cover 20 miles over the two days along one of the most scenic sections of the Appalachian Trail. They’ll spend the night camping with fellow hikers before finishing the trek in Hot Springs. The event culminates in an informal celebration with the bikers and hikers at the Laughing Heart Lodge & Hostel in Hot Springs.

Brown who serves on the Board of Sisters of Mercy’s McAuley MERCY Foundation said, “Bike and Hike for Life raises awareness and funds to assist four local non-profits that touch lives from birth to death. In the beginning, I biked 3,200 miles across the country in 2012. My wife, Karen, and I have now cycled across NC and are excited to see how the event continues to grow.”

Practice Velocity is the event’s presenting sponsor. Information about registration and launch points is available at bikeandhikeforlife.com and for more information about Practice Velocity visit its website.
