Buncombe County Health & Human Services calls for foster care volunteers

Press release:

Fostering and Adoption of Foster Children Can Change the Game for Kids in Care

Buncombe County, N.C. – When children have a safe and stable home life we know that it creates a stronger foundation for their growth. A forever family and supportive foster parents help create good memories and safe learning experiences that tip the balance towards a future where they can thrive. These conditions help to build the foundation for an independent, confident adult to emerge. There are 90 children that need a forever family right now in Buncombe County.

“When a child in foster care ages out of care without the crucial connections that foster and adoptive parents provide, their brains can be impacted by a lack of healthy connections. They can struggle with finishing school, keeping track of their health, finding a job, and maintaining safe relationships,” says Angie Pittman, HHS Social Work Division Director.

When a child has a positive role model, they can see what a healthy future looks like. Pittman continues, “Foster and adoptive parents are an enduring source of strength and resiliency for kids in care. Some of us take these abilities for granted but when you don’t have a stable, safe environment to grow up in, these skills can be harder to come by.”

If you are a responsible and caring adult who has room in your heart to consider being a foster or adoptive parent, please ask yourself, “Can I do that for a child?” BCHHS offers free foster parent training sessions which are a great way to learn more about fostering or adoption. You can also contribute to the Foster Child Wish List, which provides access to afterschool programs or sports.

To those in our community who have answered the call by giving the extra room in their hearts and in their homes to a child that needs it, thank you! Your involvement in that child’s life lives on in the world of social workers, biological parents, friends, family, and most importantly, in the heart and future of that child.
