Press release from White Horse Black Mountain:

In the ancient Celtic seasonal Wheel of the Year, the summer solstice was Litha, marking the life-giving Sun’s longest appearance in the sky. Asheville’s Carolina Ceili celebrates the solstice in style with a special concert, “The Longest Day/The Shortest Night” at the White Horse Black Mountain on Sunday, June 21, 2015 – 7:30 p.m. In addition to the headliners’ innovative arrangements of traditional Celtic music and originals, the event will feature art by Sundara Fawn and students of the Roots+Wings School of Art and Design, as well as bagpiping from Connell Sanderson and lighted hoop dancing by Cristina “Rainflower Hoops” Holt.

Carolina Ceili is made up of musicians from diverse backgrounds who have gravitated toward Celtic music. Recent transplant Maggie Anderson (bodhran drum/flute) is classically trained and sang opera, musical theater and various styles of popular music before founding Atlanta’s popular Keltic Kudzu in 2000. Marcos Harkness (mandolin) is a native of Panama with a wide range of musical influences from Latin and classical music to punk and blues who discovered bluegrass and traditional Irish music while at Penn State and in Washington D.C.’s active folk scene. Guitarist Darlyne Cain is a full-time musician and prolific songwriter in multiple genres with four CDs of original music to her credit. Laurie Fisher (fiddle/flute), a professional fiddler for twenty years, is a fixture on the Asheville traditional dance scene as a musician and contra dance caller. Everyone contributes to the group’s signature four-part vocal harmonies, a key to Carolina Ceili’s love for wrapping up traditional music in contemporary arrangements.

A percentage of ticket and merchandise sales will benefit the Roots+Wings School of Art and Design Student Scholarship Fund.

Show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 advance/ $15 door.
Advance tickets available online.
