Celebrating Thomas Wolfe in October

PRESS RELEASE:

 

Thomas Wolfe one of the greatest American novelist of the early 20th century was born October 3, 1900 in Asheville, he was, he wrote in Look Homeward, Angel – “the tiny acorn from which the mighty oak must grow, the heir of all ages, the inheritor of unfulfilled renown, the child of progress, the darling of the budding Golden Age.”

We begin Saturday October 1st 9am to 430pm with free tours for North Carolina residents, cake, and a used book sale. Our special guest will be author Jennifer Prince with her new book for young adult readers, “The Life and Times of Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe.”

At 6pm October 5th in the Lord Auditorium of Pack Memorial Library join a panel discussion “Snapshots of History: Thomas Wolfe’s Asheville” to investigate teaching historical topics in Wolfe’s works.

October 13th join a dramatic reading of Thomas Wolfe’s writings “Conversations with Wolfe’s Parents, W.O. and Julia Wolfe” 5:30pm at the Memorial Visitor Center, sponsored by the Wilma Dykeman Legacy.

October 15th the Thomas Wolfe 8K Run begins 8am at the Thomas Wolfe Memorial sponsored by the Asheville Track Club. Registration fee for runners.

October 22nd the “Tell Our Tales” Student Writing Competition award ceremony will be held in the Memorial’s visitor center auditorium 11am – 12pm. Students selected as prize winners will read their papers. Reservations needed but Free.

Throughout October find displays of Thomas Wolfe’s books in our local public libraries and independent bookstores.
