The Henderson County Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Event Jan. 4

(HENDERSONVILLE, NC, December 11, 2013) – The Henderson County Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Event is scheduled for Saturday, January 4, 2014 from 9am to 2pm at Jackson Park. At this post-holiday event, Christmas trees will be chipped into mulch and a fragrantly fresh heap of chips will be available for free gathering. This year, strands of non-working electrical tree lights will be collected and donated to the County Cooperative Extension Service as well. Volunteers with ECO, the Environmental & Conservation Organization, will help get your trees to the chipper and serve hot apple cider to participants. In 2012, 1,097 trees were chipped, 249 of which were untied from car roofs and chipped in just 5 hours! This event is great for the whole community because it keeps valuable Christmas trees out of the landfill and turns them into a useful product. Those planning to collect mulch should bring boxes or bags.
Beginning the day after Christmas, trees may be dropped off to the parking lot for Field #3 at Jackson Park. Christmas tree vendors are encouraged to bring leftover trees to the site. Trees will be chipped on January 4. Hendersonville city residents may leave their Christmas trees at curbside, where the trees will be chipped and counted as part of the recycling project. No balled trees or wreaths or greenery with wire will be accepted.
During the Saturday event, ECO volunteers will direct traffic, help unload trees, and assist participants who gather mulch. Community members interested to volunteer with ECO should call Doreen Blue at (828) 693-9263.
This event is coordinated by ECO in cooperation with Henderson County Parks and Recreation, Hendersonville Public Works, and Henderson County Solid Waste Dept and sponsored by King’s Hardware. The event will take place rain or shine.
