While the City of Asheville has contracted out road resurfacing for some major routes, City Public Works crews are rolling up their sleeves to tackle some shorter stretches.
Work begins Monday on the resurfacing of Evelyn Place from where it intersects with Edwin Place to Murdock Avenue. So the resurfacing project will cross over Kimberly Avenue.
“None of the roads we are doing in-house are very long because these shorter roads struggle to compete with larger roads for resurfacing funds,” said Streets Manager Chad Bandy.
After City crews mill the road down, workers put down an average of 4 inches of asphalt. Once the resurfacing is complete, they remark intersections for crosswalks.
Bandy projects the Evelyn Place resurfacing will take about two weeks. The street will be blocked off and detours posted. Most of the time local traffic can access the street as crews do the work.
For the Evelyn Place job, the City is combining two work crews – that’s 10 workers – to expedite the resurfacing as much as possible.
After Evelyn Place, the City will resurface Midway Drive, a street that runs somewhat between Merrimon and Kimberly avenues. That will take place the middle of July. Then toward the end of July and possibly into August Jersey Street in Montford will be resurfaced.
