Council on Aging to offer free tax assistance

A program from AAAP Foundation Tax-Aide, Buncombe County Library System and Council on Aging of Buncombe County will offer free tax preparations to low- to moderate-income taxpayers, with preference given to those age 60 and older. The service will be offered at four Buncombe County Libraries, Mondays through Thursdays, from Feb.1 to April 15. Both Federal and N.C. State tax returns will be filed electronically. Photo identification is required from both the taxpayer and spouse, if applicable. See below for full details.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, in cooperation with the I.R.S, N.C. Dept. of Revenue, Buncombe County Library System and Council on Aging of Buncombe County will again offer free tax preparations for taxpayers with low and moderate-income, with special attention to those age 60 and older. This service will be available from February 1, 2015 through April 15, 2015 at sites listed below. Both Federal and N.C. State tax returns will be electronically filed for safe and accurate preparation and faster refunds

Tax-aide sites and hours:
• Pack Library, 828-250-4700

Mondays & Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Free parking is offered for the first hour at the Civic Center Garage

Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Weaverville Public Library, 828-250-6482
41 North Main St., Weaverville
Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Black Mountain Library, 828-250-4756
105 N Dougherty St., Black Mountain
Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Taxpayers should bring the following documents:
• Photo I.D. for taxpayer and spouse;
• Social Security cards or equivalent for all taxpayers and dependents;
• Proof of health insurance coverage: Medicare A or C, Medicaid, CHIP, government, employer, individual or Marketplace (Form 1095-A, Exemption Certificate)
• Previous year (2013) income tax return;
• W-2 forms from each employer;
• 1099 forms for income from Social Security, Pension, Interest,Dividends, Brokers/Mutual Funds, Miscellaneous Income, Gambling Winnings (Form W-2G) and any other income;
• Detailed list and receipts for Medical Expenses, Charitable Contributions, Real Estate Taxes and Mortgage Interest (Form 1098), if you are claiming itemized expenses;
• Any other tax forms or information for both income and expenses;
• A voided check for direct deposit of any refund to your checking or savings account.
