Dance for Democracy fundraiser Friday August 14th

One hot ticket on Friday night will be the dance party for a cause at The Orange Peel.

50 years after the historic US Voting Rights act became the law of the land, some groups are still working to increase voter opportunity and turn out. One such group acting locally is Democracy NC. As a fund raiser for their efforts, Democracy NC organizers have put together a DJed dance with broad appeal to folks who care about their cause. It would not be surprising to find people from all areas of the community at the event as well as local politicians and candidates.

Press release:

Local advocates have organized Dance for Democracy, a night of dancing to great music from Motown to Rock ‘n Roll and Swing to Hip Hop – to promote and protect the right to vote in North Carolina.

The Orange Peel has generously donated the venue for the event, which runs from 8 pm to Midnight on Friday, August 14th. Popular DJ Marley Carroll will cue up the tunes. Table seating will be provided for non-dancers.

Tickets are $10 and $50 for patrons (includes pre-party with complimentary appetizers and drinks) – go to this web site for more info and to purchase tickets.

“Many of us are concerned about the direction of our state, particularly the new law that makes voting much more difficult,” said Kim McGuire, board member of Democracy North Carolina, which the event will benefit. “Dance for Democracy is a fun way to support the work it takes to defend our fragile democracy and to help put our state on a better path going forward.”

In addition to raising funds the event will invite people to volunteer on voter registration and outreach with various non-partisan nonprofit groups that are working to expand voter participation in western NC: Children First, Green Opportunities, League of Women Voters, Mountain Voices Alliance, Mountain Peoples’ Assembly, and YWCA of Asheville.

All ticket income and donations go to Democracy NC, a 501c3 organization, and are tax deductible as allowed by law.
