DENR to conduct survey of residents near hazardous Buncombe County sites

Responding to an inquiry from Buncombe County School Board member Lisa Baldwin, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources Public Information Officer, Cathy Akroyd, reports that the agency is going to conduct a survey to determine exactly which residents have water wells within a half a mile radius of the Champion Finishing and Square D sites. Here’s the email Akroyd sent to Baldwin:

In order to facilitate a prompt response to concerns about area groundwater quality, DENR is planning to conduct a receptor survey for water wells at all properties within a 1/2 mile radius of the Champion Finishing and Square D sites.

· 376 parcels, including mobile home parks and other parcels with multiple street addresses, have been identified in the subject area.

· We are in the process of obtaining information to identify addresses without a municipal water connection for the initial phase of the survey, followed by sampling of any active wells identified.

· We anticipate that follow-up will include a door-to-door check of all parcels/addresses in case some owners have wells in addition to a municipal connection.

We are hoping to begin sending letters to property owners tomorrow.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Cathy Akroyd
