Moral March to the Poll Rally
September 22, 2014
Burnsville, NC
Town Square
5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

BURNSVILLE, NC – Thirteen months after the people of Yancey and Mitchell counties made their voices heard from the Town Square in Burnsville, North Carolina, the Forward Together Movement will gather there once again. On September 22, the Yancey-Mitchell NAACP will host a Moral Monday rally that will focus on cuts to public education, poverty wages, denied health care coverage, fracking, equal protections under the law, voter obstruction and oppression, judicial obstruction, and tax increases on the poor and the middle class.

The Yancey-Mitchell NAACP has assembled a long list of noted speakers to address these issues. Rev. Beth Turner, Ned Doyle, Tracy Deyton, Allison Bovee, Wanda Woodby, Billy Garcia, Nicole DelCogliano, and Robin Ellis will join keynote speaker Tim Tyson in responding to the most severe damages wrought by the state legislature.

This Moral Monday will be one in a series of March to the Polls rallies, whose aim is to mobilize and educate voters. “When less people vote,” Tyson said in Burnsville last year, “people who are really unpopular have a chance to win. It’s the only way they can stay in office and it’s wrong. Much of it is actually truly unconstitutional and the NAACP is suing them. We are going to win.”

It is appropriate, then, that this year’s Burnsville Moral Monday comes four days before the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals hearing on the legality of the regressive Voter I.D. laws implemented in July 2013.

In addition to these speakers, there will also be music by Typical Mountain Boys and Kim and Pete McWhirter, and skits by Ellen Denker and Robin Ellis.
