Dirty Dozen Down! hike challenge celebration Nov 7 in Asheville

Press release from the The Wilderness Society:

The public is invited to join in celebrating the end of the Dirty Dozen Wilderness Hike Challenge, a year-long wilderness hike challenge presented by The Wilderness Society’s Southern Appalachian Office in Sylva and Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine.

The Dirty Dozen Down! Hike Challenge Celebration will take place Saturday, November 7, 2015 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at The Millroom in downtown Asheville. It is free and the public is invited. Attendees must pre-register via the celebration’s Eventbrite web page.

The celebration will feature food from Green Sage Café, and live music from local favorite Tellico. A cash bar of local beer will also be available. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the hike challenge, and those who completed the challenge will be recognized during the event.

Created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Wilderness Act, the Dirty Dozen Hike Challenge began in September 2014 and ran through September 2015. To complete the challenge, participants had to hike 10+ miles in 12 [of the many] designated wilderness areas in the Southeast by September 2015 (for a total of 120+ miles hiked).

More than 550 hikers registered to participate in the challenge, and submitted more than 800 hike experiences online, providing wonderful descriptions and photos of their hikes in wilderness.
