Eugenics compensation bill not included in senate budget bill

From the press release from the state:

Raleigh – The Senate Appropriations Committee is conducting a hearing this morning to discuss aspects of its budget bill, which includes no funding for eugenics compensation or to continue the work of the N.C. Justice for Sterilization Victims Foundation.

The meeting began at 8:30 a.m. in Room 643 of the Legislative Office Building. Those who wish to speak must sign up by 9 a.m. Public comment is expected from about 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Live audio of the meeting is available at http://www.ncleg.net/Audio/Audio.html.

Last week, House members passed a bill that includes Gov. Bev Perdue’s call to pay $50,000 lump sum compensation to living victims, as well as fund continuation of the Sterilization Victims Foundation, which provides services to victims.

The Sterilization Victims Foundation continues to assist individuals who believe that they or someone they know may have been affected by the N.C. Eugenics Boards program.
