Federal law could force increase in Asheville City School lunch price

According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, In another blow to local families’ food budgets, the price of lunch could be going up at Asheville City Schools’ cafeterias, thanks to a change in federal law.

The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 says school systems can’t use federal dollars from the free or reduced lunch program to subsidize the cost of lunch for those not enrolled in the program.

City school officials have proposed raising the cost of lunch by 10 cents to reduce the gap between what they are charging now and what it costs to provide the meal.
