Employment trends in the Asheville area are following the national trend of increased hiring, according to Friday Staffing, an Asheville area staffing agency. As announced earlier this month, the national unemployment rate fell below 6% for the first time since 2008. Friday Staffing reports that permanent employment obtained through their staffing agency have increased 135% in 2014, when compared to the same time in 2008. The data comes from analyzing Friday Staffing’s internal statistics on open positions, applications, hires, and permanent employment from 2008 to 2014.
“To see an increase of 135% is significant,” said David Modaff, President of Friday Staffing. “The data provides a real contrast to the perception that there is no hiring going on in the local economy.”
Friday’s also reports that they’ve seen a 52% increase in qualified applicants in 2014, when compared to the same time in 2008. Modaff attributes this increase in part to Friday Staffing’s improved online application system and outreach efforts this year.
“Employers need skilled workers. Western North Carolina is home to a skilled and diverse labor force,” said Modaff. “We’ve improved our systems of finding those applicants and matching them with employers.”
For Friday Staffing, the numbers are only one part of the story.
