ASHEVILLE. N.C. (May 22, 2013) – Mission Foundation today announced that the inaugural Friends of Mission Charity Classic professional golf tournament raised $50,000 to benefit Mission Health’s Women’s Health Services.
“Congratulations to Guilia Molinaro on her commanding win in the first-ever Friends of Mission Charity Classic, and we extend an enormous thank you to the 144 women of the LPGA’s Symantra Tour for helping us to raise awareness of and funds for Mission’s Women’s Health Services,” said Bruce Thorsen, president of Mission Foundation, “We knew it was going to be a big event, a special event, and the community responded in kind with humbling generosity. These sponsorship gifts will be used fund programs that specifically benefit the health and well-being of the women of western North Carolina.”
In addition to supporting outreach initiatives that bring health screenings and special programs to women in communities across the region, proceeds from the golf tournament will be used to enhance services provided to women at Mission Hospital. Women have unique health needs, and Mission tries to offer those special services that include:
• Maternal fetal medicine unit for high risk pregnancies. Mission Hospital is the only hospital in the region where women who are experiencing high-risk pregnancies can be admitted to receive close monitoring of their baby as well as special care for the mother by specially trained nurses.
• Four special rooms with Jacuzzi-type tubs used with labor for mothers who want that experience.
• The only known in the nation “Survivor Program”. The “Survivor Program” is a unique service provided to women going through labor and delivery who may be experiencing additional stress related to previous sexual or physical abuse. Often, pregnancy or labor stirs up the trauma. Mission Hospital has nurses who are specially trained and undergo ongoing education and certification to help these women manage and cope.
• Women’s specific surgical unit where women care for women. Mission Hospital has an 18-bed, women’s-only surgical unit that treats the body, mind and spiritual needs of women. It incorporates complementary integrative health therapies such as music and pet therapy, aromatherapy, healing touch and more. The unit’s décor, ambience, special touches make it more comfortable for women, including relaxation stations on the TV, relaxation panels in the ceiling, special order, educational TV programs about women’s medical issues and many other “small things” that make a difference.
• Access to specialty care. Mission has on staff the only two urogynecologists in the region who specialize in conditions such as pelvic floor, a common, but often overlooked condition.
• Pre-surgical programs. Mission also has one of the only pre-surgical programs for women. Prior to any surgical procedure, women have the opportunity to meet with specially trained nurses to review the entire procedure, tour the facility and get questions answered. The program provides a sense of comfort leading up to, during and after treatment.
