Giant Puppet-making workshop Nov 9-11

Press release

from Asheville Puppet Artists

The Giants are Coming to Asheville!

(Not the San Francisco Giants!) An Asheville collective of artists is bringing the renowned puppet theater company Paperhand Puppet Intervention, maker of giant puppets, to town for a three-day maker workshop, November 9-11.

They will be teaching the magical arts of creating giant paper mache puppets and pageants at the new Asheville Community Movement space in the River District. There is still room for participants in the workshop.

Paperhand Puppet Intervention, based in the Chapel Hill area, has been using cardboard, corn starch, bamboo, old house paints, and other assorted junk to create giant puppets, masks, shadow plays, and performances for all ages since 1998. They tell stories, beat drums, paint cardboard, sew cloth, get sweaty, push boundaries, and carry heavy things to help make the world a better place.

The time is right to bring giant puppets to WNC. There is a puppet renaissance going on. Puppet slams play to packed theaters. Next spring there will be a downtown parade for the National Day of Puppetry. A monthly puppet club meets in Montford to share ideas and knowledge.

Giant puppets are a visual delight and draw attention in a way that nothing else does, telling stories and promoting community building. They can enhance our many festivals and local events, educate and activate people, and express our unique creative spirit.

The collective wants to bring together creative people and build a whole pool of puppets that can be used by many local groups and events. This workshop is the start of it. Artists, performers, teachers, community organizers, activists and anyone interested in learning these sculptural skills is invited to sign up. The cost is only 120.00 for three days.

The organizers are running an Indie Gogo campaign to raise funds for the workshop, covering material costs and providing scholarships. They would appreciate your support. Find the details at the link.
