Go Granny D: UNC Asheville presents one-woman show by Barbara Bates Smith

PRESS RELEASE:
Go Granny D, a one-woman show by Barbara Bates Smith with music by Jeff Sebens, will be presented at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11 in the Reuter Center, home of OLLI, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville. This event is free and open to the public.

Go Granny D tells the story of Doris “Granny D” Haddock, who walked across the country at age 90 to rally support for campaign finance reform. When she arrived in Washington, D.C., Haddock was greeted by more than 2,000 supporters. In 2004 when she was 94, Haddock ran for the U.S. Senate as a Democrat in New Hampshire, but lost to incumbent Republican Judd Gregg.

Barbara Bates Smith, noted for her off-Broadway adaptation and performance of Ivy Rowe from Lee Smith’s Fair and Tender Ladies, has toured for 27 years with the works of Lee Smith, recently adding A Rash of Stories (adapted from works by Ron Rash) to her repertoire.  For a decade, Jeff Sebens has accompanied her shows with a variety of hammered dulcimer, lap dulcimer, guitar, and banjo music.
