Hall Fletcher hosts Oct. 27 Chess Picnic in Pritchard Park

From Hall Fletcher Elementary:

Asheville, NC, October 15, 2013: Pawnstorm, Hall Fletcher Elementary’s Chess Team, is hosting a “Chess Picnic” in Pritchard Park in Downtown Asheville on Sunday, October 27, 2013 to raise funds and support for Hall Fletcher Elementary’s Chess Team. Pawnstorm Team Members, ages 6-11, will be bringing their 14-foot-square large-scale chess board (as well as tabletop chess sets) to demonstrate the game and the social and intellectual benefits of chess to society. Members of the community will be challenged to play against these young chess masters, and to support the team with monetary donations.

Hall Fletcher Elementary, located at 60 Ridgelawn Road in East-West Asheville, in addition to being Asheville’s smallest public elementary school and a magnet school for science, math, and technology, serves the highest proportion of minority, low-income, and special-needs students of any school in the city. As such, the benefits that chess brings to children’s self-esteem, intellectual development, and life skills could not be more critical.

Pawnstorm, Hall Fletcher’s Chess Team, was founded and is coached by third grade teacher Brian Randall. Enthusiasm for chess has swept the school, with most of the third, fourth and fifth graders playing the game daily, while kids as young as kindergarten are honing their expertise. The fundraiser will support after-school chess coaching, travel to tournaments, and team t-shirts.
