Hendersonville Police Department announces surveillance area for safe internet purchase exchanges

Press release:

NEWS RELEASE

HENDERSONVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT
145 5
th Avenue East, Hendersonville, NC 28792

The Hendersonville Police Department recognizes the increasingly popular option to purchase and sell items using Internet sites such as Craigslist, Backpage.com, Facebook and others.

Many citizens who use those sights meet to exchange items and/or cash. There have been numerous incidents across the country where these exchanges have gone badly including homicides, thefts and assaults. Because of these, many citizens have suggested that there should be safe exchange locations that are public and are in areas are under video surveillance.

The Hendersonville Police Department is welcoming citizens to make these exchanges in the parking lot of its station, located behind City Hall at 6th Ave and King Street. There is a sign posted in that parking lot labeled “INTERNET PURCHASE EXCHANGE LOCATION – THIS AREA IS UNDER VIDEO SURVEILLANCE.”

When parking near that sign, citizens can rest assured that they are in sight of official video cameras that record 24/7. There is also usually a police presence nearby inside our station. The Hendersonville Police recommend that these transactions be made during daylight hours. The Hendersonville Police Department offers this area for child custody exchanges as well. Our overall goal is to offer an area of heightened surveillance, where our citizens can feel safe about these types of exchanges.
