Hendersonville officials issue water-pressure, safety alert for Fletcher area

PRESS RELEASE
HENDERSONVILLE WATER/SEWER

The water customers of Hendersonville Water and Sewer, in and around the Fletcher area are currently experiencing a low to no pressure condition due to an unscheduled outage that occurred earlier this morning. This loss of pressure was partially due to a broken service connection on the water main between Hendersonville and Fletcher along U.S. Highway 25 North just south of the Fletcher town limits.

Crews responded to this break around 10 p.m. last night. After completing this repair, we received another call informing us that a fire line serving a warehouse in the Fletcher Business Park had broken, which then caused the storage tank in the Fletcher area to begin to empty. This situation caused a drop in pressure the water system serving this portion of the County. The fire line was isolated around 7:30 this morning and water pressure is currently being restored in the system.

Periods of low to no pressure in this area increases the potential for back siphonage and the introduction of bacteria into this portion of the City’s water distribution system.

As mentioned, City forces have completed their repairs to the water main break and hope to have pressure restored to normal early this afternoon. Hendersonville Water and Sewer staff will be collecting bacteriological samples in the affected area for testing this morning. Therefore, the North Carolina Division of Water Resources advises that when water is restored, water customers

Boil All Water used for human consumption (including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation) or use bottled water.

Vigorous boiling for one (1) minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.

This office is strongly urging the water customers in this part of the City’s water system to conserve water whenever possible. This advisory remains in effect until further written notification is issued. When bacteriological sampling has been completed and meets or exceeds federal and state requirements the City will issue a press release to rescind this Water System Pressure Advisory. Please stay tuned to WTZQ, WHKP, WGCR, WMYI, WWNC, WLOS-TV, WSPA-TV or WYFF-TV for this press release. We will also post this press release on the City’s website at http://www.cityofhendersonville.org. Just paste this address into your web browser to view the press release once all testing and sampling is complete.
