High School students to explore health careers at MAHEC Conference

Press release from UNC Asheville:

High School Students to Explore Health Careers at MAHEC Conference on October 7

More than 450 high school students from across the region will explore career opportunities in health careers and college preparation, when MAHEC presents its 15th annual Health Careers Education Awareness Conference on Oct. 7 at UNC Asheville’s Sherrill Center.

The conference provides an opportunity for students to engage and interact with health professionals to gain inspiration, direction and confidence in pursuing careers in the health fields.

“We host this conference annually to help students have a better understanding of health career opportunities, to increase personal health awareness through education, and to increase the number of minority and economically challenged students who matriculate in the health sciences and pursue careers in the health profession,” said Jacquelyn Hallum, director of Health Careers and Diversity Education at the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC).

“UNC Asheville is pleased to co-sponsor the 15th Annual MAHEC Health Careers Education Awareness Conference,” said Provost Joe Urgo. “Our partnership reinforces the university’s public responsibility to address North Carolina’s health care needs by educating the next generation of health care professionals. Both the science and the finance of health care make training and education social imperatives. Health care touches the lives of every citizen and remains the fastest growing economic sector in North Carolina.”

Registration for the Health Careers Education Awareness Conference is free and remains open for all area high students through September 23. For more information and registration, visit http://tinyurl.com/HEAC2014 or contact Jacquelyn Hallum at jacquelyn.hallum@mahec.net or 828.257.4479.

This event is sponsored by MAHEC’s Department of Health Careers and Diversity Education; MAHEC’s WNC Regional Advisory Committee representing a broad range of educational and health institutions; UNC Asheville’s Office for School and Community Outreach Programs & Partnerships; and Wells Fargo.
