From Environmental and Conservation Organization (ECO) and Falderal Winery:

Falderal Winery will be the location for the next Sustainable Living Workshop sponsored by the Environmental and Conservation Organization (ECO) on Tuesday, August 27, 6:30-8:30 p.m.. The topic, “Growing Organic Hops,” will be presented by Lisa Schacht, who grows hops organically on her family farm near Dupont State Recreational Forest. The workshop cost $15 per person. Reservations are required. Sign up on-line atwww.eco-wnc.org or phone the ECO office at 828-692-0385. Falderal Winery is in downtown Hendersonville at 131 Third Avenue West.

Workshop attendees will learn how hops are grown from the rhizome, the time table for growing, the pests and challenges, the harvest, and the uses, from beer making to tinctures for pain relief.
“I feel strongly about growing organically, without the use of harmful chemicals, which all circles back around to my years of study and work in health and wellness. I will be bringing some of our harvest for folks to smell and taste,” Ms. Schacht said. “I want the workshop to be fun and to include all the senses for a full learning experience.”

ECO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1987 to preserve the natural heritage of Henderson County and the mountain region as an effective voice for the environment. The organization focuses on four key areas: green infrastructure, water quality, energy conservation and renewable energy, and recycling. Sustainable Living Workshops are held monthly and are open to the public.

Falderal Winery recently opened an adjunct business, The Cork & Cap, which sells top-of-the-line kits for making wine and beer at home as well as supplies and equipment for the homebrewer. Falderal’s small-batch award-winning wines are made from kits and locally grown grapes in the winery below the retail shop.
