Kent Paulette exhibits paintings at Pisgah Brewing

Pisgah Brewing Company is currently exhibiting the works of Kent Paulette. Paulette uses uninhibited, energetic brush strokes and knife marks to create paintings with thick icing-like textures.

Paulette finds his inspiration from the nature that surrounds him where he lives near Boone, NC. On the weekends, he takes that inspiration with him to Studio 140 in downtown Banner Elk where he paints live in front of spectators. “For the past year and a half, I’ve been painting while being surrounded by a very interactive crowd which adds a whole new element of chance to the process.”

For Paulette, each painting is a gamble, a leap into the unknown, a wild ride of exploration and experimentation. He paints to figure things out, not to achieve a specific result. Unexpected or unintended outcomes are welcome; they offer openings through which new possibilities can be glimpsed, imagined, and developed. Paulette works to exploit these opportunities, continually pushing himself and his paintings beyond the boundaries of habit and into the realm of chance.

He was drawn to Pisgah Brewing Company for several reasons. It’s been 5 years since Paulette (aka Derfla) has shown in the Asheville area. Pisgah regularly has live music which is a perfect fit for Paulette’s edgier paintings and paintings of musicians. There are nudes in the exhibit with names like ‘Flesh and Divinity’ alongside paintings of musicians such as Miles Davis, Neil Young, and Devendra Banhart.

Paulette’s paintings will be displayed until the end of February at Pisgah Brewing Company located at 150 Eastside Dr, Black Mountain. (828) 669-0190. His paintings can be viewed online at www.KentPaulette.com.
