Local Subway restaurants show appreciation to Habitat volunteers
Statewide Effort Fed 2,000 at Habitat Build Sites in Honor of National Volunteer Week
Asheville, N.C.– In celebration of National Volunteer Week approximately 2,000 Habitat for Humanity volunteers working across North Carolina received catered boxed lunches from local franchise owners and employees of SUBWAY® restaurants. The initiative was to show appreciation to the volunteers assisting Habitat for Humanity.
“Subway’s meaningful donations during National Volunteer Week made it possible for us to show our volunteers how much we appreciate their commitment to Habitat for Humanity, because if it were not for volunteers, Habitat simply would not exist,” explained Christine Odom, Habitat for Humanity of North Carolina Executive Director.
The North Carolina Habitat for Humanity is working to make a difference in local communities by its 80 affiliates and approximately 175,000 volunteers. The volunteers help to complete hundreds of building projects throughout the state. Collectively, the affiliates have built over 10,000 homes since 1983.
This year, local SUBWAY® restaurants donated lunches to volunteers at Habitat ReStores and multiple job sites throughout Asheville, Yancey, Henderson, Macon-Jackson, Haywood, Transylvania, and Rutherford areas.
“Each Subway restaurant is locally owned and operated and we are dedicated to supporting our communities,” said Kevin Duval, local owner of SUBWAY® restaurants in Western NC. “We wanted to take this opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to our neighbors who take time out of their busy schedules to help others in need.”
In fiscal year 2014, Habitat for Humanity nationally served over 1.6 million people through home construction, rehabilitation and repairs and by increasing access to improved shelter through products and services. Other efforts like training in construction and financial management, and by advocating for policies and systems that increase access to housing solutions, an additional 3 million people now have the potential to improve their living conditions. Over 1 million families have been served as of June 2014 since Habitat was founded in 1976.
